USAID Reaches out to Minority Serving Institutions

​The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) held an all-day summit for minority serving institutions (MSI) on November 6 in Washington, DC. The event, which was attended by representatives of MSIs from across the country, featured an overview of USAID opportunities, a panel session on the strategic direction of USAID programs, tips for finding and taking advantage of the right USAID opportunity, and advice from program officers on what USAID is looking for in proposals and collaborations.

HUD and DOJ Work Together to End Homelessness Among Re-entry Population

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice have annou​nced​ they are partnering to create the Pay for Success Permanent Supportive Housing Demonstration (PFS), an $8.7 million program focused on testing cost-effective ways to prevent homelessness and reduce recidivism among the justice-involved population.

A coalition of industry, advocacy groups, and nonprofits have endorsed a letter outlining seven “areas of focus for Congressional action” to support American innovation. The letter builds from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 2014 Report, Restoring the Foundation: The Vital Role of Research in Preserving the American Dream​.

NSF Plans Briefing on Policy Changes

​​Jean Feldman, head of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Policy Office, is encouraging all GRC members to register for an October 29, 2015 webinar to review pending changes to the Proposal Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG). Attendees of GRC’s August meeting heard Feldman discuss the revisions, which will take effect January 25, 2016.​​

Administration Initiative to Advance Urban Design and Data

The Obama Administration recently released a multi-agency initiative to build urban infrastructure that improves the collection, aggregation, and use of data by harnessing low-cost sensors, and research collaboration. The “Smart Cities” initiative is investing $160 million in federal research, spread between six different agencies, to enhance research into safety, energy, climate preparedness, transportation, health, and technological infrastructure.

In an effort to keep the pipeline from their campus to business healthy, many universities have created new resources to guide new businesses through these pitfalls, creating student-run entrepreneurship clinics, where aspiring startups can receive legal advice free of charge. ​
