Chemical History of the Manhattan Project
This course examines the scientific developments leading up to and during the Manhattan Project and early years of the Cold War. We will talk about the discovery of fission, the nuclear fuel cycle, reprocessing chemistry, the legacy waste, and missions of the current US Department of Energy national laboratories. Throughout the course, the scientific developments will be put into the historical, political, and social context that made the Project possible. Grading will be largely based on daily journal reflections and a final group oral project presentation about nuclear energy-related issues. This course has a pre-requisite of CHEM106

Mexican Politics: This course is a survey of contemporary Mexican politics. Emphasis is on recent economic and social changes and their impact on Mexico’s political system. Topics include one-party rule, economic and political reforms, the emergence of opposition politics, and democratization. One objective of this course is to explore and understand the political and economic changes that are currently taking place in Mexico and thus allow us a greater understanding of future changes that are certain to occur. The broader objective of this course is to use the study of political and economic changes that have taken place in Mexico as a way to understand similar processes occurring around the world.
