Office of the Registrar / Non-Degree Student Admission

Non-Degree Student Admission

Non-degree enrollment status is designed for students who wish to take courses but do not plan to pursue a degree. Non-degree students do not qualify for financial aid. Non-degree students are part-time students and are expected to enroll in no more than eleven credits per term. Students wishing to take more than eleven credits per term must be given permission or be admitted as a degree-seeking student.

Admission Requirements

Non-degree enrollment status does not require a formal admission process or formal entrance requirements. There is a $20 non-refundable application fee. Enrollment as a non-degree student does not guarantee regular admission to the College. Students wishing to apply for full admission should refer to the appropriate instructions through the Admissions website. Please note that academic performance is not the sole criterion for admission to the College. The College may evaluate a person’s behavior and background to determine their ability to maintain the standards of academic and professional conduct expected.

Registration

Once you apply for non-degree admission you will receive an email containing the necessary information for you to obtain your SMCM ID number, computer access, and registration information.  You can visit the SMCM Portal to start looking at what classes are being offered.  Non-degree seeking students will be permitted to register for classes once New Student registration is complete.

Non-degree students may be asked to take placement tests or provide transcripts from previously attended colleges in order to verify the student’s completion and/or grade(s) of past course work prior to enrolling in certain SMCM courses.

Tuition and Fees

Non-degree students enrolled for eleven or fewer credits are assessed tuition and fees at resident rates based on undergraduate course level. Enrollment in excess of eleven credits requires tuition and fee assessment at the rate for a regularly enrolled, fully admitted student. For the 2017-2018 academic year, non-degree students will be charged $350 per credit plus $48.50 in fees per credit for in-state and $450 per credit plus $48.50 in fees per credit. Additional fees for individual courses may charge for specific classes.

Financial Aid

Non-degree students are not eligible to receive financial aid.

Grade and Transcript Information

Non-degree students are given grades, reviewed according to the College standards of good academic progress, and provided with academic records. Students can access final course grades by accessing their SMCM Portal account.

For information on how to order an official transcript, visit Transcripts.

How to Apply

Fill out the Non-Degree Application.

For students who are in their junior or senior year in high school and would like to take a class at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, they will need to complete the Concurrent Enrollment form.  This form requires students to have their high school counselor and principal to approve the concurrent enrollment.

St. Mary’s offers a Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver for anyone who over 60 years of age (or disabled and under 60 years of age), a legal resident, and dependent mainly on retirement or social security income, and not employed full-time in any other capacity.

Additional Forms and Information

Non-Degree students will need to complete a drop/add slip at the time of registration in order to be added to the class of their choice.  Once you have completed the application process and registration for non-degree students registration is open, please bring the drop/add slip to the Registrar’s Office in Glendening Hall Suite 120.

Once you have completed the application process and you have been approved to attend St. Mary’s as a non-degree seeking student, you will be required to complete the student request for Computer Usage form. This form will go to the Office of Information Technology in Baltimore Hall.
