Office of Residence Life Summer Housing Program

This page provides students with important information regarding summer housing. Please read it carefully as you are accountable for adhering to this information. All summer residents must abide by standard College policies as noted on the Housing Contract, and in the College Catalog, Student Handbook, and the SMCM website.

The Office of Residence Life manages one residential area during the summer (May 17 – August 6) for use by SMCM students who are enrolled in SMCM summer school classes, field school, and/or working on- or off-campus. Students employed on- or off-campus must work at least 25 hours per week for each week that they are residing on-campus.

2021 Summer Housing Contract 

Check-In and Check-Out Information:

Full summer residents must vacate their assigned room as noted above.  The only exceptions will be for those students who are:

• Fall semester Residence Life staff
• Fall semester Orientation Leaders (supervisor documentation required)
• Members of or trying out for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, field hockey, cross country, or volleyball (documentation from coach required)
• Continuing as Campus Store employees (supervisor documentation required)
• Continuing as Admissions Office staff (supervisor documentation required)
• Continuing as Lab assistants (supervisor documentation required)
• Continuing as HSMC interns (supervisor documentation required)
• Teaching assistants (supervisor documentation required)
• Completing the Computer Science Co-op summer program (supervisor documentation required)
• Conference Assistants (supervisor documentation required)
• Continuing work on SMPs (faculty mentor documentation required)

Facilities & Services:

• Available Rooms:  
  • Townhouses will be used to house SMCM students during the summer.  
  • Students will be assigned to double rooms on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A small number of singles are available. Priority for these spaces goes to students with documented medical, ADA, or psychological needs.
  • Roommate requests will be honored as long as both students notify the Office of Residence Life in writing by April 15.
  • All units can be considered for Open (all-gender) Housing during the summer on a first come, first served basis. 

• Residence Life Staff:  
  • There will be one RHC and six RAs working during the summer.  
  • Residence Life staff will be available each night of the week from 8 p.m. – midnight, Sunday – Thursday, and 9 p.m. – 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

• Programming:
  • Residence Life staff will provide occasional programs for the residents (i.e., cookouts, tournaments, trips to local sites, etc.).
  • Students with program ideas should contact an RA or the RHC
  • Free, weekly River Concerts are scheduled on the Townhouse Green every Friday night starting in mid-June through the end of July.  Food and beverages are available for a fee.

• Wellness Center:
  • The Wellness Center will be open, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. to all SMCM students.
  • Counseling is available during the summer.
  • Our contract providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and, psychiatrist) do not visit campus from mid-May until after classes begin in the fall.
  • A nurse will not be available for triage in the summer. Referrals to local Urgent Care Centers will be provided.

• Campus Center Mailbox:
  • Each resident living on campus during the summer will be able to continue to use his or her Campus Center mailbox.  Students who wish to use their mailbox while they have on-campus housing for the summer need to go to the Office of Student Activities to fill out the necessary paperwork by May 1. Students can only continue to use their Campus Center mailbox while they have on-campus housing for the summer.
  • Students who do not turn in their mailbox key before permanently leaving campus (graduation, leave of absence, transferring, etc) or who neglect to submit the necessary paperwork as noted above will be charged a $25 fee to replace the mailbox lock and key for the fall semester.
  • All student mail is forwarded to your permanent address for the summer unless the Office of Student Activities is notified by April May 1.

• Athletic & Recreation Center:
  • Residents will be allowed to use the facilities.
  • Hours of operation will be determined.

• Waterfront:
  • Students in good standing who have completed the campus swim test at the Aquatic Center are welcome to use the Waterfront facilities (including kayaks, sailboats and paddle boards) during recreational hours.

• Laundry Facilities:
  • Summer students may use the laundry room in Caroline.  
  • There is no laundry fee for students during the summer.

Summer Meal Plans:

• Meal plans are optional for all summer residents, including summer school students. Residents may sign up for a voluntary meal plan if so desired.
• THE GREAT ROOM WILL BE CLOSED ON WEEKENDS. Please plan accordingly.
• “Anytime Dining” will not be available. The Great Room will be open at designated times. Meal schedule will be posted each week.
• Since the meal plan is optional, the residents will have access to the kitchen in their units.
• Residents are required to clean up after themselves after each use.          
• Residents should plan to provide their own kitchen equipment (pots, pans, utensils, plates, bowls, cups, etc.).
• FOOD SERVICES WILL NOT BE IN OPERATION FROM MAY 7-17 and AUGUST 2-15. Please plan accordingly.

Housing and Meal Plan Fees:

The housing fee structure is a tiered pricing structure.  SMCM students who are working off-campus will pay the highest rate for the convenience of living on-campus instead of off-campus. Students enrolled in SMCM summer school classes will pay a lower rate because they are working toward academic credit. Students working on-campus will pay the lowest housing rate because they are providing needed services that benefit the College, often at minimum wage.

If a student will be here for more than one reason (e.g. summer school and employment), the student will be charged the housing fee associated with the longer length of time they will be on campus. For example, if the student is enrolled in an SMCM six-week summer school course and working on-campus at least 25 hours/week from May 17 – August 7, then the student will be charged the on-campus employment fee. If the student is taking a class and working off-campus all summer, the student will be charged the off-campus housing fee.

Meal Plans*

*Students who are here all summer may purchase a second meal plan as needed if they run out of meals before the end of the summer. The Great Room will be closed from August 2-16. All meal plans end as of July 30, even for students that have to stay on campus due to jobs that continue until classes begin. Please plan accordingly.

Housing Contract:

• Each resident must sign a housing contract, which will be available March 2nd by filling out a form online. Forms will be sent out by email. If you have not received it please contact Derek Young in the Office of Residence Life (dmyoung@smcm.edu)
• To be guaranteed housing, the housing contract must be submitted by April 16.
• Housing will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis until all beds are full (which may happen before April 16). Housing assignments will be sent out on April 26.
• Housing is not guaranteed for students who submit the housing contract after April 16.
• Roommate requests must be mutual and in writing (e-mail is fine), and need to be submitted to the Office of Residence Life by April 16.
• Requests to be released from the housing contract must be submitted in writing by May 1; otherwise, a late housing contract release fee will be assessed from May 1-May 10. Students who notify Residence Life after May 10 that they will not be living on campus will be financially liable for the full amount of the summer’s housing fee to which they were assigned.
• At least one of the following must apply for students or May graduates requesting to live on campus during the summer (do not submit the housing contract until you have all of the required information):
  • You are registered for at least one SMCM summer class or for Field School. You must indicate the course code(s) (e.g. EDUC180) for which you are registered on the housing contract.
  • You are employed at least 25 hours per week on- or off-campus. You must include the on-campus hiring office and your supervisor’s name or the name of the off-campus business and your supervisor’s name, email, and phone number on the housing contract.
  • You are participating in an internship for credit or for pay for at least 25 hours per week (see above).

On-Campus Employers:

If you will be paying for the room and/or board costs for your summer student employee(s), please make payment arrangements directly with the Business Office.
