Fire Safety

• Never leave a stove or microwave unattended.If you have a pot or a pan on the stove or a dish in the microwave stay with it all times.
• Keep your work area clear. When cooking keep flammable items such as paper towels away from the stove surface.
• While cooking, use oven mitts to prevent burns and roll up your sleeves.
• Open flames and smoking: The use of candles and smoking tobacco is prohibited inside any building on campus.
• Electrical use: Do not overload outlets and/or power strips.
• Grills may only be used outside and only match light charcoal is permitted.

• A fire emergency exists whenever:

• A building fire alarm is sounding
• An uncontrolled fire or imminent fire hazard occurs in any building or area of the campus
• There is the presence of smoke, or the odor of burning within any campus building
• There is spontaneous or abnormal heating of any material
• There is an uncontrolled release of a hazardous material
• There is the odor of natural gas in any building on campus

• Pull a building fire alarm if you discover or suspect a fire. Red fire alarm pull stations are located near every exit.
• Evacuate the building immediately. Follow the “Fire Alarm/Emergency Building Evacuation Protocols.”

  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the trigger/lever
  • Sweep the spray from side to side
• Rules of Extinguisher Usage:
  • Be trained in extinguisher use
  • Use only on small fires
  • Ensure that there is an exit available, keep the exit to your back

• Stuff the cracks around the door with towels, clothes, rugs, etc. to keep out as much heat and smoke as possible.
• Hang an item out of the window to attract attention.
• Call 911 to report that you are trapped and provide your exact location.

Students should gather in the designated locations listed below:

• Calvert Hall: Students should move toward the front steps of St.Mary’s Hall. In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter St. Mary’s Hall.
• Caroline, Dorchester, and Prince George: Students should move to the Montgomery Hall patio area located at the main entrance of the building. In the event of bad weather or extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter Montgomery Hall.
• Lewis Quadrangle: Students should move toward the grass areas around DPC. In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter DPC.
• Queen Anne Hall: Students should move toward the wooded area behind the dumpster located in the front of the building (parking lot). In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter Montgomery Hall.
• Greens Townhouses – Harrington, Boone, Homer Dodge, Margaret Dodge, Morsell, and Trueschler: Students should exit toward the Townhouse Green and then proceed to the patio area of DPC. In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter DPC.
• South and North Crescent Townhouses: Students should move toward the grass areas around DPC. In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter DPC.
• Waring Commons: Students should move toward Lewis Quad. In the event of bad weather or an extended evacuation, students will be permitted to enter the LQ Pub and DPC. Students should not block the roadway.
