Camp Ramapo
One of the few residential summer camps serving children with social, emotional, and learning problems.
Every summer, 175 young people take the job of a lifetime as counselors at Camp Ramapo.
Specialty counselors are offered a salary, room and board, and travel reimbursement. Also, through their affiliation with the National Program on Non-collegiate Sponsored Instruction (National PONSI), Camp Rampo offers an on-site fieldwork course, “Field Experience in Special Education”, worth 6 credit hours to camp counselors.
Camp Royall
A residential summer camp run in conjunction with the Autism Society of North Carolina (30 minutes from Chapel Hill). It serves children and adults (ages 4+) with Autism.
Counselor positions usually fill up by early April.

The Curry School of Education at University of Virginia Ed. Psych.: Applied Dev. Science Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The Educational Psychology and Applied Developmental Science (EP-ADS) doctoral program prepares promising students to conduct research in education science. The program focuses on the social and cognitive lives of children and adolescents, the contribution of school and out-of-school settings on learning and development, and the development and evaluation of interventions designed to alter and improve developmental pathways. The program is located in Charlottesville.
The program lasts eight weeks, and potential interns have to consider that they must be able to commit for the full duration of the internship.
Students will strengthen the skills needed to get into and successfully complete a doctorate program in education research. Recruits qualified students for doctoral training in EP-ADS leading to research careers in the education sciences in academic, policy, or research organizations. Increases the number of students from underrepresented groups who enter EP-ADS which will in turn help diversify the field of education research and broaden the range of perspectives.
SURP interns are eligible for:
- A $3000 stipend for the course of the 8-week session,
- Up to $250 for travel expenses to/from Charlottesville,
- $500 toward meals,
- Housing in a university residence hall,
- Paid registration and travel to a research conference,
- And an application fee waiver when applying to graduate programs at the Curry School of Education.
Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development’s Annual Summer Internship Program
Summer interns will receive close mentorship by faculty, post docs, and graduate students, and will learn all aspects of cognitive development research. Under the direction of Drs. Lisa Feigenson and Justin Halberda, the Lab is currently investigating a range of issues including memory development, numerical abilities, logical reasoning, and language acquisition, in populations including young infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults.
Summer stipends up to $1800 will be available to excellent applicants.
The number of interns vary based on the number of projects and mentors available. Typically, they take between 5-7 interns and receive 300 applications.

National Institute on Aging Summer Internship Program
The NIA Summer Internship Program, with over 25 years of history, offers unique opportunities for high school, college, graduate, and medical students, to develop skills in scientific research. In this program, based in Baltimore, Maryland, students receive hands-on research experience. Interns assist researchers in investigating factors related to aging, including the biology of aging, neuropsychology of aging, behavioral and social changes, and geriatrics. NIA summer internships last from eight to ten weeks, beginning in late May and ending in mid-to-late August. Students receive hands-on experience and attend weekly seminars presented by NIA scientists. At the conclusion of the summer program, students present their data developed from their research project at the NIA Summer Student Poster Day. Program participants receive a stipend which is based on the amount of education completed at the time the fellowship begins.
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Summer Internship Program
This NIDA Summer Research Internship Program is designed to train individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research workforce, to conduct research and to prepare for careers in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences such as individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis. Interns assist researchers in investigating the neurobiological mechanisms and behavioral and cognitive effects of drugs of abuse and of drugs that may be used in the treatment of addiction. Studies are conducted on animals and humans using a variety of techniques, including behavioral evaluations, neuroanatomical analyses, pharmacological and electrophysiological activation of brain circuits, and brain imaging.
Although this program is designed to enhance underrepresented populations in science, all racial/ethnic populations are eligible to apply. Interns will receive stipends in the amount of $12.00 per hour for a maximum stipend of $3,840 for eight (8) weeks.
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Summer Internship Program in the Neurological Sciences
Students get hands-on experience working with leading scientists in the Institute’s Division of Intramural Research, the “in-house” research component of the NINDS. NINDS Labs are located in Bethesda and Rockville.

Pathways, Inc. offers comprehensive rehabilitative, treatment, and vocational services as well as affordable housing to adolescents and adults. Based in Hollywood, MD, it is the longest operating and largest provider of community-based mental health services in St. Mary’s County.

Summer Science Fellowships sponsored by the American Psychological Association
An expenses-paid, intensive summer training program, the SSF places up to 12 talented students in the psychology laboratories of some of the most outstanding researchers in the Washington, D.C. area. The lab experience is six weeks in length. The SSF program gives students an opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal and social processes of scientific inquiry and to experience cutting-edge psychological research through hands-on laboratory activities. SSF offers promising students the opportunity to equip themselves with skills essential to succeed in graduate school, and gives students who plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychological science the opportunity to be mentored by nationally-known faculty.
Association will allow undergraduate students to be immersed in psychological science during an expenses-paid summer training program. Positions available for psychology majors who are rising seniors.
APA will pay students a summer salary, as well as cover all travel and living expenses. This should make the program financially feasible for most college students.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Services Administration
The SAMHSA Internship Program introduces students to the important role SAMHSA plays in ensuring a productive life in the community for everyone.
Wediko Summer Program in New Hampshire
Wediko is a non-profit agency dedicated to children who are in need of special education and clinical services. “Today, Wediko continues to focus on at-risk children whose emotional and behavioral symptoms interfere with their ability to function in school, at home, or within the community…[by providing] year-round residential care.” (Wediko, “History”) Wediko operates its New Hampshire Summer Program, an academic residential treatment setting for children with serious emotional and behavioral disturbances (SED) “beyond the capacity of most public school systems.” (Wediko, “History”).
Each year, the Summer Program offers paid internships to students from colleges across the nation. These interns not only enable the success of 145 at-risk youth, but also benefit from ample opportunities for personal and professional growth.
This opportunity offers a stipend, room & board, as well as an AmeriCorps education award for those who qualify.

Child and Family Therapy (CFT) Clinic at Kennedy Krieger Institute
Within the CFT Clinic, we provide outpatient therapy services to children ages 5-18 who present with externalizing and/or internalizing concerns (e.g., ADHD, anxiety) as well as families experiencing relational difficulties (e.g., parent-child conflict, separation). Our patient population consists of primarily typically developing children. As an undergraduate intern, you would have the opportunity to observe therapy sessions conducted with families, observe clinical supervision, assist with scoring psychological measures, and manage office tasks. Please note that undergraduate interns will not have any direct contact with patients.
The internship is minimum of 10 hours/week and is open to junior or senior psychology majors in good academic standing (i.e., GPA of 3.0 or higher). The internship is particularly beneficial to students who what to pursue graduate school for clinical or counseling psychology. Fall, Spring, and Summer internships available at locations in locations in Columbia, Odenton, and Baltimore City.

Barstow Acres Children’s Center
A private, non-profit organization that provides comprehensive mental health services to children and their families. It is currently the largest provider of children’s mental health services in Southern Maryland.
They are always looking for volunteers/students for internships (especially in the summer).

Life Skills Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP) day program in Gaithersburg, MD routinely seeks Psychiatric Rehabilitation Coordinators with case management and group experience to work with the mentally ill adult population in a fast-paced, team environment. Person must be flexible to work on and off site, have good time management, be organized, a self-starter and provide own transportation. Ability to drive a van a plus. Internships are available (as are salaried full-time jobs with benefits after graduation). Experience working with the chronically mentally ill is preferred. Copper Ridge Institute
The Copper Ridge Institute (CRI), affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is at the forefront of scientific research related to the treatment and care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with two intervention studies examining how (if at all) physical exercise (walking or the gym) impacts
individuals suffering with dementia. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in the intervention and data collection process. CRI is also conducting two validation studies; the first
on an internet based Dementia Risk Assessment, and the second on a novel assessment consisting of six computerized tests. Interns will learn how to administer various assessments
and have the opportunity to assist in data collection. Depending on level of interest and prior experience interns may have the opportunity to assist with data analysis and literature reviews.

The League for People has several positions open and internships available for its Camping & Therapeutic Recreation Program, Camp Greentop, in Western Maryland.
The Maryland Anxiety Center
The Maryland Anxiety Center offers an internship program to provide undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to develop specialized training on the nature and treatment of anxiety and related disorders from a cognitive behavioral perspective. Interns participate in weekly training sessions in which they learn from experts about cognitive behavioral therapy, the treatment of anxiety and OCD-related disorders, and get an inside view of what it is like to work as a therapist in private practice. As part of their training, interns receive psychoeducation about disorders, diagnostic measures, and treatment modalities. They also observe mock intake evaluations and mock therapy sessions. In addition, MAC interns assist with various projects such as researching, writing, developing presentations, and creating clinical and administrative materials.
Five undergraduates are accepted per term (Fall, Spring, Summer).
