Jeffrey Silberschlag, professor of music and director of instrumental ensembles at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, will lead a group of more than 50 professional musicians and students this year to the 15th anniversary season of the 2018 Alba Music Festival in Northern Italy. Silberschlag also serves as co-director of the festival.
Repertoire will include the world premiere of Arnold Saltman’s Symphony No. 4 “A Choral Symphony on the Poems of Judah Halevi.”
Joining Silberschlag at the festival will be: St. Mary’s College faculty members Larry E. Vote, head of vocal studies; Karen Johnson, flute; Brian Ganz, piano; José Cueto, violin; Janice Meyerson, mezzo soprano; along with Jeff Chappell, pianist; John Rojak, (American Brass Quintet); Ping, (St Mary’s College’s a cappella vocal ensemble); and the U.S.A./Italy Alba Music Festival Virtuosi (an ensemble of musicians drawn from across the United States).
In addition to his position at St. Mary’s College, Silberschlag is the music director of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Chesapeake Orchestra. On May 12, Silberschlag will lead the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Bowie State University’s Performing Arts Center. He will then lead the Chesapeake Orchestra during the 20th season of the River Concert Series, June 22 – July 21, on the Townhouse Green of St. Mary’s College.
Before coming to St. Mary’s College, Silberschlag held the principal trumpet positions of the Italian National Symphony Rai-Torino, New York City Opera National Company, and the associate principal trumpet position of the Jerusalem Symphony. He has recorded as conductor or trumpet soloist with the London Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Czech Radio Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and the Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI di Torino.
