Madeline “Maddie” Roth ’14 recently received the Cecilia Connelly Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Underwater Archaeology, one of the undergraduate and non-academic scholarships and training grants offered each year by the Women Divers Hall of Fame for diving related disciplines including marine biology, conservation, teaching, and underwater archaeology. Roth is currently an M.A. student in the Maritime Studies Program at East Carolina University. Her thesis site is a nineteenth-century shipwreck off the Florida coast that the National Park Service excavated last summer. “We were able to recover tar samples with embedded microbotannicals (which is pretty awesome),” she said.
Roth plans to use the scholarship to conduct the tar analysis and species identification.
