Assistant Professor of Chemistry at St. Mary’s College of Maryland Geoffrey Bowers recently had an article published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C titled “Role of Cations in CO2 Adsorption, Dynamics, and Hydration in Smectite Clays under in Situ Supercritical CO2 Conditions.” It is the first paper from a new collaboration involving scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Michigan State University, and St. Mary’s College. They are studying the ways variably wet supercritical carbon dioxide interacts with minerals common in shale, using a series of specialized research instruments only available at PNNL.
