13th Annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast, Jan. 16

December 12, 2016

mlk-breakfast

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 13th Annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 16, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The breakfast will begin at 6:30 a.m. and costs $10 payable at the door. The program will begin at 8 a.m. at no cost, featuring a keynote address by David Kendall. Following the program, beginning at 10 a.m. the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Zeta Omega Chapter will host an MLK Day of Service, providing training, services and activities for students of all ages and adults. The breakfast and program will be held in the J. Frank Raley Great Room, Campus Center (18952 E. Fisher Road). The Day of Service will be held within Anne Arundel Hall (47407 Old State House Road). For more information, contact events@smcm.edu or call (240) 895-4310.

David Kendall has been a partner at Williams & Connolly LLP since 1981 and has worked on a variety of civil and criminal cases. He has litigated in front of seven state supreme courts, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Among his clients are the Baltimore Orioles, who sought the naming rights to Camden Yards in 2001, and former C.I.A. director David Patraeus. His most famous clients are the Clintons, both Bill and Hillary.  He has also protected first amendment rights and given copyright advice for multiple companies including The Washington Post, Newsweek, National Review, the Motion Picture Association of America, and Discovery Communications.  Kendall is also on the board of directors for the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. and serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School.

The MLK Day of Service, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., will include a variety of sessions covering topics such as college selection and financial aid with a panel featuring St. Mary’s College, College of Southern Maryland, Morgan State University and Bowie State University; home ownership and financing; blood pressure screenings and mini-health presentations by experts; and presentations focusing on global awareness.

The Day of Service will be the last day for the sorority’s backpack collection, canned food drive and seasonal wraps for the needy (e.g., coats, hats, and gloves.). Those interesting in providing a backpack, nonperishable food snacks for students (e.g., juice, 8 oz. water, dry cereal, fruit snacks, cheese crackers, and granola bars), school supplies (e.g., pens, pencil, loose-leaf paper, crayons, glue, and folders), and/or canned goods for families are welcome to bring them to St. Mary’s College, which serves as the final collection site.

The Annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King, Jr., Prayer Breakfast draws community-wide attendance, including local government officials, religious leaders, and business persons. The event is sponsored by St. Mary’s College of Maryland, St. Mary’s County Human Relations Commission, St. Mary’s County Public Schools, the College of Southern Maryland, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Zeta Omega Chapter.
