The San Francisco Mime Troupe is theater of political satire, rooted in the performance traditions of commedia dell’arte (16th c. Italian street theater), broad farce, and melodrama. Since its inception 57 years ago, the troupe has performed its socially conscious theater worldwide to critical and popular acclaim.
In the current climate of “Black Lives Matter” and local and national conversations about race, “Freedomland” speaks directly to what it means to be black and male in America in our supposedly “post-racial” society.
For black army vet, Nathaniel, a lead character in “Freedomland,” no place is safe, not even his homeland. It’s a war zone: war on drugs, war on illegal immigration, war on . . . you name it. And he and other black men like him are in the crosshairs. Maybe it’s safer for Nathaniel to re-up than to try to survive here at home, in “Freedomland.”
