St. Mary’s College of Maryland landed on the 2016 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Squad while eight Seahawks earned spots on the 2016 IWLCA Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll. The IWLCA released its list of honorees on Friday afternoon.
St. Mary’s was named an Academic Honor Squad for the fifth straight season. The Seahawks were one of 276 schools across NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA selected as IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squads for the 2015-16 academic year.
In order to qualify for this prestigious honor, the women’s lacrosse team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the year. The 26-woman roster joined forces to tally a 3.329 cumulative team grade point average for the 2015-16 academic year.
This is the program’s eighth team academic award in nine years. St. Mary’s was one of seven Capital Athletic Conference institutions to be honored by the IWLCA as Christopher Newport University, Frostburg State University, Marymount (Va.) University, University of Mary Washington, Salisbury University, and York College of Pennsylvania all made the cut as well.
In addition, seniors Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), Claire McGagh (Baltimore, Md./Friends), Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley), Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro), Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), Kate Somerville (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), and Maggie Wagner (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and junior Mackenzie Rayburn (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) gained recognition for their academic prowess as members of the IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll.
In order to be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater. Dunn, McGagh, Newman, Poffenberger, Sartor, Somerville, and Wagner were all repeat honorees while Dunn posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in her final year.
