Chosen as a wildcard team, the SMCM men’s rugby team made it to the final round of NSCRO 7’s Championship.
After defeating strong opponents from Franklin and Marshall College, Ithaca College, Claremont College, the team made it to the semi-finals to face Susquehanna University. SMCM defeated Susquehanna with a score of 17-12, and thus went on to face the other semifinalist champion.
In a grueling final match, SMCM ultimately fell to the defending champions from New Mexico Highlands University. From a wildcard entry, the SMCM men’s rugby team is now ranked second in the nation within the NSCRO group. There are 230 other teams that compete in the league.
Ivan Messi ’17 and Will Hankins ’19 were named to the NSCRO Men’s 7’s All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play during the championship. Messi was also a nominee for the Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award at the championship.
