Troy Townsend, visiting assistant professor of chemistry at St. Mary’s College, has been appointed fellow for the Office of Naval Research Summer Faculty Research Program (ONRSFRP) at the Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division in Patuxent River, Md.
The program provides science and engineering faculty members from institutions of higher education the opportunity to participate in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and peers at U.S. Navy Laboratories for a 10-week period. Program participants have an opportunity to establish continuing research relationships with the R&D personnel of the host laboratories, which may result in sponsorship of the participant’s research at their home institutions.
Townsend holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of California, Davis, and a B.A. in biology and chemistry from St. Mary’s College. He has published 14 research articles, one scientific book, two U.S. patent applications and supports an active undergraduate research group. His areas of interest include nanomaterials, photovoltaics, power and energy, inorganic chemistry, and materials science. Specifically, Townsend’s research investigates the design, synthesis, and device applications for inorganic nanocrystals with a focus on energy and power systems.
