Barrett Emerick, assistant professor of philosophy, has published the peer-reviewed article “Empathy and a Life of Moral Endeavor” in Hypatia, a journal of feminist philosophy, in 2016. In the
article, Emerick examines Jean Harvey’s insights on injustice and resistance, including what she called “civilized oppression.” He then argues that one noxious form of civilized oppression is what Miranda Fricker calls “testimonial injustice,” and follows Harvey in arguing that one of the methods by which individuals should work to avoid perpetrating testimonial injustice is by empathizing with others.
Barrett Emerick has been assistant professor of philosophy at St. Mary’s College since 2011. His areas of interest include normative ethics, moral psychology, social philosophy, feminist philosophy, epistemology, environmental ethics, and philosophy of race – as well as how each of these areas relate to each other. His previous publications include the article “Perceptual Failure and a Life of Moral Endeavor” in Social Philosophy Today.
