This group addresses issues such as environmental protection, women’s rights, maternal and infant health, nutrition, vaccinations, small business loans, education and transportation. Melissa worked in nutrition education and presented informal presentations on basic nutrition to community groups. Melissa also assisted in collecting interviews from teenage mothers, attended heath awareness events, assisted in peaceful protests, prepared posters for a vaccination campaign and attended the opening of a maternity ward.
About the internship, Melissa said she enjoyed interacting with locals. “I really liked the idea of helping people; it was a very humbling and empowering experience.”
Jessie Sandino
Jessie interned with the Centro de Desarollo Social y Laboral in Cuenca, Ecuador. The organization helps patients with mental and physical disabilities find jobs and other resources.
Sharing her best memory, Jessie said, “I observed the psychologist help an older lady relax. The lady was very upset and it was cool to see how the psychologist helped her calm down. He made her lie down and, keeping a quiet tone of voice, he talked her into a trance and the lady fell asleep. After she woke up, she was a completely different person, calmer and smiling.”
