Anthropology major Kaiolani Siregar ’14 was awarded the Undergraduate Student Paper Prize on March 15 at the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference in Langhorne, Pa. Siregar’s paper, “XRF Elemental Analysis of Morgan Jones Ceramics in the Chesapeake Region,” examined the elemental composition of ceramics attributed to the 17th-century potter Morgan Jones, who operated kilns in Maryland and Virginia in the latter half of the 17th century. Siregar’s work was supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is assisting archaeologists in Maryland and Virginia in determining how extensive Jones’s trading network was and how connected people in early colonial times.
“It was very exciting to be able to do cross-disciplinary research, working in a chemistry lab for the purpose of doing archaeological research,” Siregar said.
Siregar’s paper will be published in the 2015 issue of the Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology.
