St. Mary’s College of Maryland graduated 28 students with the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching on Saturday, June 1. The commencement address was delivered by Maryland Secretary of Higher Education Danette Gerald Howard.
President Joseph Urgo advised the MAT class of 2013 to “remember this experience for a lifetime” and to “reflect on the ideals that can be drawn from it, all of your lives, in any circumstance, at any time or place, as you seek to lead responsible, meaningful, and effective lives.”
Director of Teacher Education Lois Stover charged the graduating class to “be good keepers of the faith of the power of education to transform. Share your passion for learning, your passion for sustaining this earth, for the arts, for history, literature, the beauty of mathematics, the power of scientific inquiry, for diversity of all sorts.”
The following graduates received awards at the commencement ceremony:
- Julie Walter received the Ardith Z. Harle Master of Arts in Teaching Scholarship.
- Holly Fabbri received the Dallas P. Dean Teacher Education Award.
- Hannah Boward, Allison Buxton, and Holly Callan received the Justin Bates Memorial Endowed Scholarship.
- William Eaton and Carly Legg received the Natalie Parran and Ben Parran Award.
- Molly Dougherty and Stephanie Warren received the Joshua L. Siegert Memorial Scholarship for Future Educators.
- Gena Hlavinka, Elise Kielek, and Abigail MacLean-Blevins received awards from the H. Thomas Waring World Fund.
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree at St. Mary’s College is a full-time, year-long program. Certification programs exist for elementary certification in grades one through six, and secondary English math, social studies, biology, chemistry, physics, and theater for grades seven through twelve. Art, music, and foreign language majors may also certify in their disciplines for grades preK-12.
