St. Mary’s College of Maryland, along with the Chesapeake Orchestra and its Music Director Jeffrey Silberschlag, are proud to announce the program for the 15th Annual River Concert Series. The family-friendly orchestral series, which has become a traditional part of summer in St. Mary’s County, will again feature six Friday night concerts on the grounds of St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
This season’s concerts start on June 21 and will continue through July 26. Concerts will start at 7 p.m., with grounds opening at 5 p.m. Food and beverages, provided by local vendors, will be on location. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own refreshments.
The program includes the following:
June 21: “Night in Vienna,” featuring the music of Johann Strauss, Jr., Richard Rodgers, and Beethoven. Also performing is dynamic young cellist Julian Schwarz, who recently appeared as soloist with the Seattle Symphony.
June 28: Works by Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” will be highlighted, with narrator Sheryl-Marie Dunaway and the Ballet Caliente dancers. A fun work about Tyrannosaurus Sue will also be performed, featuring Bryan Bourne as trombone soloist, and Zachary Silberschlag, trumpeter in Copland’s “Quiet City.”
July 5: The River Series celebrates Independence Day with a program featuring music of the sea, “1812 Overture,” plus Sousa and fireworks. The evening’s program also features soprano Jennifer Page.
July 12: Guest conductor Larry Vote will direct a chorale of our best local choirs, and baritone Bob McDonald is featured in an Americana program of the music of Aaron Copland.
July 19: It is back to Baroque, with music of Handel, Bach, and Telemann, featuring soloists from the Chesapeake Orchestra’s celebrated performers, Jose Cueto (violin), Regino Madrid (violin) and Fatma Daglar (oboe).
July 26: The season concludes with a Big Band tribute with popular vocalist Sara Gray.

Jeffrey Silberschlag, music director of the Chesapeake Orchestra, holds the Lifetime Achievement in Arts Award from the European Union of the Arts, awarded in Prague in 2011. Silberschlag has recorded with the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Warsaw Philharmonic and the Czech Radio Orchestra.
