St. Mary’s College of Maryland senior Emily Burdeshaw has the distinction of being NAVAIR’s first Pathways Program employee.
Burdeshaw was hired as part of the Pathways Program, part of President Obama’s federal hiring reform initiative, which became effective in July 2012. Pathways consists of two new programs — the Internship Program and the Recent Graduates Program — and modified another, the Presidential Management Fellows Program. These developmental programs are tailored to promote employment opportunities for students and recent graduates in the federal workforce and make it easier for them to pursue federal careers.
“St. Mary’s is about creating a well-rounded individual through cross disciplinary development,” said Burdeshaw. I was able to bring a number of helpful skills to my position within NAVAIR that eventually led to my current Pathways position. I think that is what a liberal arts education is all about – taking the abstract skills learned in the classroom and applying it to concrete, real-world scenarios. My summer internship advisor, Robin Bates, really encouraged me to seize every opportunity available to me, and my current internship advisor, Brandi Stanton, has continued to support that sentiment.”
