Year in Review: Top Headlines in 2012

As we prepare to usher-in 2013 and say goodbye to 2012, St. Mary’s College reached into its archives and pulled out some of its notable news coverage from throughout the year.

Recognized as One of the Nation’s Top Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report

In the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” 2013 edition (released in Sept. 2012), St. Mary’s College was ranked one of the top five public liberal arts colleges in the nation, and was also listed as number 87 of the top 100 national liberal arts colleges. The college was also selected to be featured in the U.S. News Best Colleges 2013 guidebook. Read more.

Named a “Best Value Public College” by the Princeton Review 

The Princeton Review distinguished St. Mary’s College as one of the nation’s “Best Value Public Colleges,” as well as a “Best Northeastern College” in its 2013 edition of “The Best 377 Colleges,” which was released in the fall of 2012. Read more.

Featured in Princeton Review’s Green College Guide

St. Mary’s College was featured in “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition,” a downloadable book that profiles 322 schools in the U.S. and Canada that demonstrate the greatest environmental and sustainability-related commitments and initiatives. Read more.

Included in Fiske Guide to Colleges

St. Mary’s College was included in the 2013 “Fiske Guide to Colleges” based on the college’s excellence in a broad range of topics of interest to students and their families. The 2013 “Fiske Guide to Colleges” was published in the fall of 2012.

Named Among Top 100 “Best Values in Public Colleges” by Kiplinger

St. Mary’s College was named one of the top 100 “Best Values in Public Colleges” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance for 2012. The annual report cited four-year schools delivering a quality education at an affordable price, a ranking that is based on the school’s high four-year graduation rate, low average student debt at graduation, abundant financial aid, low sticker price, and overall great value. Read more.

Study Abroad Program Recognized Among Top in the Nation

St. Mary’s College was recognized by the Institute of International Education as one of the nation’s top higher education institutions for international engagement. In its latest Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, St. Mary’s ranks in the top 40 in the nation for total number of students sent abroad, and among the top 20 in the nation for overall study abroad participation rate. Read more.

PGMS Awards St. Mary’s for Best Maintained Landscape in the Country

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) announced St. Mary’s College winner of its 2012 Grand Award. The award distinction is the highest in PGMS’ Green Star Professional Grounds Management Awards program. It recognized St. Mary’s as having one of the country’s best maintained landscapes in the colleges and universities category, which placed the college among overall past PGMS award winners such as The Disneyland Resort, Smithsonian Gardens, the National Zoo, and Penn State University. Read more.
