Six new trustees, including two alumni, have been approved by Gov. Martin O’Malley to join the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Board of Trustees. Board of Trustees officers for 2011-2012 will be Molly Mahoney Matthews, chair; Larry Leak, vice chair; Arthur “Lex” Birney Jr., secretary; and John Wobensmith, treasurer.

“We are honored to welcome a distinguished group of new trustees to the St. Mary’s board,” said Board Chair Matthews. “They bring a wide array of abilities including business, legal, marketing, academic, and military expertise. Two of our new trustees have served in leadership positions at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and will enhance our partnership there. Two are senior executives in large corporations, one is a former federal judge.  Half of the members of the new trustees represent diverse communities, furthering our goal of inclusion at the leadership level. We have a bright future ahead for our board as this new group joins the dedicated group of individuals serving on the board.”

St. Mary’s President Joseph Urgo agreed. “We are fortunate to have the loyalty of alumni who want to give back to the college, as shown by Don Bryan, Class of ’73, and Elizabeth Graves ’95, who have committed to serve on the board,” said Urgo.  “I look forward to working together with the trustees as we build on the tradition of academic excellence, access, and sustainability.”

The new members:

Timothy M. Broas, Chevy Chase, Maryland, has been a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Winston & Strawn since 1995 where he practices white collar criminal defense and internal investigations. Prior to joining Winston and Strawn, he practiced at other law firms in D.C. and New York City, and clerked for Justice Mark Sullivan, New Jersey Supreme Court. He received his law degree from the College of William & Mary, Marshall-Wythe School of Law, and his undergraduate degree from Boston College. He was named one of the “Best Lawyers in America” in 2010 and 2011, and was a Washington, D.C., “Super Lawyer” in 2007 and 2011. He was appointed by President Obama to the Board of Trustees for the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in the Smithsonian Institution in 2010.

Alumnus Donald Bryan ’73, Clarksville, Maryland, is a native of St. Mary’s County and earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from St. Mary’s. An avid athlete, Bryan played varsity basketball, baseball, and lacrosse while at St. Mary’s. Bryan was also the head basketball coach and assistant lacrosse coach at St. Mary’s for a number of years. He was inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame in 1990. He and his brothers, Ben and Ken, are active alumni, returning to campus for minority career panels and basketball games. Bryan also served on the Alumni Council from 1996-2002.

He belongs to the Rotary, was a 2009 graduate of Leadership Maryland, and serves on the boards of Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, College of Southern Maryland, St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce, The Patuxent Partnership, and Annmarie Garden.
