The national debt of the United States is at record levels and on an unsustainable course. Learn the future implications of this and potential solutions, as Jeff Thiebert, national grassroots director of the nonpartisan Concord Coalition, describes the causes and consequences at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, in Cole Cinema of the Campus Center at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The event will be free and open to the public.
“A central challenge for any democracy is to find a balance between the demands of citizens for ever more services with their willingness to pay for those services. Clearly, we have not found that balance,” said Professor Todd Eberly, interim director of the Center for the Study of Democracy, sponsor of the event. The national debt of the United States is $14 trillion and rising − or $45,000 for every man, woman, and child. With the retirement of the baby boomer generation, escalating health care costs and record annual budget deficits will make the federal fiscal situation unsustainable.
The Concord Coalition is a nationwide, non-partisan, grassroots organization advocating generationally responsible fiscal policy and is dedicated to educating the public about the causes and consequences of federal budget deficits.
