Students taking the ‘Books that Cook’ course, offered at both St. Mary’s College of Maryland and St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, will read their food-related works during a collaborative Writers Harvest reading at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011, in Montgomery Hall, room 25. These parallel courses are taught by associate professors Jennifer Cognard-Black (St. Mary’s) and Melissa Goldthwaite (St. Joseph’s), co-editors of Words Rising: An Anthology of American Food Writing, which will be published later this year. This event is a fundraiser for Share Our Strength, a D.C.-based organization that fights child hunger. Recommended donation $5.
Writers Harvest readers will share menu poems, recipe recollections, and food fiction that considers practices of food creation and consumption across the globe. This event is presented by the VOICES Reading Series and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program.
