St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Fourth Annual Theater, Film, and Media Studies (TFMS) Film Series kicks off with screenings of works by filmmaker Karen Aqua, followed by a chance to discuss the works with her. This screening session at 8:15 p.m. Monday, February 14, will be the first of three consecutive Monday night screenings taking place in Cole Cinema of the Campus Center. The events are free and open to the public. For further information about the film series, the filmmakers, and their programs of animation, visit TFMS’ web site at https://dev.smcm.edu/tfms/season20102011.html#fourth.
Aqua has completed 11 independently produced animated films and one collaborative animation/live action video. Her short films have screened in Croatia, Japan, and France and she has done animation for 22 segments of the iconic children’s television program, “Sesame Street.” According to Animation Magazine, Aqua “has a distinctive style and vision of her own, coupled with a dancer’s sense of movement and a musician’s sense of rhythm.”
TFMS’s film series will offer a range of films using animation and collage. Subsequent screenings will include computer animator and video installation artist James Duesing, of Carnegie Mellon University (Feb. 21), and cutout animator and collagist Lewis Klahr of California Institute of Arts (Feb. 28).
