Public auditions for the Department of Theater, Film, and Media Studies’ first show of the spring season at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Susan Zeder’s “Mother Hicks,” will be held 7-9:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 24-25 in the Bruce Davis Theater, Montgomery Hall. Callbacks will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26. Performance dates are March 31-April 10. For further information about procedures for auditioning or about the play, contact the director, Holly A. Blumner, at hablumner@smcm.edu.
Using poetry and sign language as well as dramatic action to tell its story, “Mother Hicks” is based on oral histories gathered in the rural Midwest during the Great Depression. Playwright Zeder is considered America’s leading writer of stage works for young audiences.
No experience is required to audition, although reading the play before auditioning is strongly recommended. Copies of the play are on reserve at the circulation desk of the college library.
