Gabrielle Tayac, historian at the National Museum of the American Indian, will talk about the impact of fences on Native Americans in her talk “We Do Not Fence the Land: Indigenous Concepts of Land Stewardship” at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 29, in the Glendening Annex at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The talk is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s “Between Fences” exhibition now at the college’s Boyden Gallery in Montgomery Hall through March 4.
“I will be exploring traditional Native American concepts of land stewardship which clashed with English colonial practices,” said Tayac. “I will also bring the conversation into the present to talk about other divides which are now lessening in the era of increased cross-cultural dialogues.
“Between Fences,” a collaboration between the Smithsonian and the Maryland State Humanities Council, also is a catalyst for a local related exhibition, “Facing Fences,” and includes events, lectures, films, and programs across Southern Maryland. An opening reception and listening circle is planned for 2 p.m. January 22 in the gallery. For information on events, go to www.smcm.edu/boydengallery/facing-fences.html.
