“If I could change the world through dancing with my body … that’s what I would do. That’s what I want to do with my LIFE.”
In Clare Barron’s dramatic comedy Dance Nation, winner of the Relentless Award, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2019, a fierce and awkward team of adolescent competitive dancers (played by adult actors) ready themselves to dominate everything. Barron calls it a “ghost play” in which “the actors’ older bodies are haunting these 13-year-old characters” as they rehearse a number called Citizens of the World. In turn hilarious, mortifying and heartbreaking, sometimes weird and sometimes achingly real, Dance Nation is a meditation on adolescence, connection, bodies, memory, power, and (of course) dance.
Dance Nation contains extremely course language, lots of blood, and lots of talk about sexuality and bodies. Audience discretion is advised.
