Themes include the formation and nature of the modern Russian state; the creation of the Russian empire; social and economic organization, the development and abolition of serfdom, and the experiences of peasants and nobility; westernization and the limits of westernization; the development of the Russian intelligentsia and the birth of the revolutionary movement and the modernization of Russia in the decades before World War I.
