The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Alumni Association provides a variety of scholarships to recognize exceptional members within the St. Mary’s College community. These include the Alumni Legacy Scholarship, as well as the Don Stabile Alumni Post-Graduate and Doctoral Scholarships.
The Alumni Council Scholarship and Recognition Committee selects all successful candidates. Past winners have displayed outstanding service in their communities and exemplary work throughout their academic and professional careers.
Alumni Legacy Scholarship
Description
Established by the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Alumni Association, the Alumni Legacy Scholarship is awarded annually to two incoming or current students related to an alumna/us of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded based on a combination of financial need, academic merit, and co-curricular involvements. The scholarship is automatically renewed for up to three years so long as the recipient maintains the established academic standards outlined in the Conditions of the Scholarship and continues as a degree-seeking student at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Award
The scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s account at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in two equal installments ($1,000 per semester) at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be accepted for admission as degree-seeking candidates to St. Mary’s College of Maryland
- Applicants must be related to an alumna/us of St. Mary’s College of Maryland (or its predecessor schools) in one of the following ways: a child, grandchild, or step-child
- Applicants must demonstrate financial need by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Office of Financial Aid prior to submitting an application for the Alumni Scholarship
Conditions
- Applicants must allow the Scholarship and Recognition Committee to use information submitted to the Office of Admissions and the Office of Financial Aid to be used as additional selection criteria
- Recipients must notify the Director of Alumni Relations by July 30 whether or not he or she will be accepting the scholarship
- All scholarship recipients must maintain a course load of at least 12 credit hours per semester and a 3.0 semester GPA
- If a recipient fails to meet these requirements, he or she will be placed on scholarship probation
- If the recipient’s grades do not improve to at least a 3.0 GPA in each subsequent semester, funding will be withdrawn and the Alumni Legacy Scholarship will be forfeited
Application
To be considered, the following must be submitted:
- Completed application form
- Two letters of reference with one being from a person affiliated with a school the applicant attended or is attending
Applications and References for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship must be submitted by April 1.
Applicants will be notified by July 1.
Don Stabile Alumni Post-Graduate Scholarship
Description
Established in 2013, the Don Stabile Alumni Post-Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually to one graduating student or alumna/us pursuing graduate studies. The $2,500 scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable award. However, former awardees may receive more than one award by reapplying in subsequent years. In addition, an applicant who does not receive an award one year may apply for an award in subsequent years.
Award
The awardee will receive their one-time scholarship for $2,500 by check once enrollment in a post-graduate program is verified.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be a degree-holding alumna/us from St. Mary’s College of Maryland (or one of its predecessor schools), or a graduating senior from St. Mary’s College of Maryland
- Applicants must be applying to, or enrolled in, a full-time, degree-seeking post-graduate program at any accredited college or university in the United States or a recognized college or university abroad
Conditions
The awardee will sign an “intent to accept award” form, which states responsibility to return the award to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation if he or she does not finish out the academic year at their post-graduate institution. The award will not be processed until this form is returned.

The application packet must include the following:

- Resume or curriculum vitae
- Two letters of reference
- Personal statement (one page, max 500 words) incorporating answers to the following:
- If awarded this scholarship, what graduate degree will you pursue or continue to pursue? Explain the reason for your study, career choice, and long-term career plans.
- Describe your participation in volunteer service activities and other college, civic, professional, or community activities. Indicate dates and degree of your involvement and explain the significance of these activities to your personal and professional aspirations.
- Specifically, how would you use this $2,500 scholarship to aid in the pursuit of your post-graduate degree?
Applications and References for the Post-Graduate Scholarship must be submitted by April 1
Don Stabile Alumni Doctoral Scholarship
Description
Established in 2011, the Don Stabile Alumni Doctoral Scholarship is awarded annually to one graduating student or alumna/us who pursues a Ph.D. in one of the liberal arts disciplines. The $5,000 scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable award. However, former awardees may receive more than one award by reapplying in subsequent years. In addition, an applicant who does not receive an award one year may apply for an award in subsequent years.
Award
The awardee will receive their one-time scholarship for $5,000 by check once enrollment in a doctoral program is verified.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be a degree-holding alumna/us from St. Mary’s College of Maryland (or one of its predecessor schools), or a graduating senior from St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
- Applicants must be applying to, or enrolled in, a full-time, degree-seeking doctoral program focused on scholarly research at any accredited college or university in the United States or a recognized college or university abroad (certificate programs, not applicable).
- Those students applying to, or currently enrolled in, medical school, law school or pursuing a doctorate in education are ineligible, but may apply for the Alumni Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Conditions
- The awardee will sign an “intent to accept award” form, which states responsibility to return the award to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation if he or she does not finish out the academic year at their post-graduate institution. The award will not be processed until this form is returned.
- The awardee will write a one-page summary of his or her experience when the academic year is over.
