Transfer applicants are students who will have completed at least 12 semester hours of college-level coursework (after high school graduation) OR have attempted at least one semester of full-time coursework and maintained enrollment through the add/drop period (after high school completion).

Q: Will my credits transfer?
A: Most likely! Students can transfer up to 90 credits from a regionally accredited college or university or up to 70 credits from a Maryland Community College.
- Remedial or college preparatory credits do not transfer.
Q. What is the difference between unofficial and official transcripts?
A. Transcripts submitted directly to us by the school/electronic transcript service are official. If you send us the transcript, it us unofficial.
Q. Where can my school send my official transcript (high school and or college?
A. Your school can send your official transcript to admissions@smcm.edu. If your school only can send it by USPS mail it must be in a sealed envelope stamped “Official”. Our mailing address is:

Q. Who sends you my letter of recommendation?
A. Your professor/advisor/author of the letter will need to send us the letter of recommendation. It can be mailed or sent to admissions@smcm.edu.
Q: Is there housing available for transfer students?
A: Absolutely! We offer a variety of housing options for transfer students.
Q: Are there scholarships available for transfer students?
A: Yes! We offer merit and need-based scholarships to transfer students. Merit scholarships are based on your application information. To receive need-based grants and scholarships you must complete the FAFSA. The SMCM FAFSA code is 002095.
Q: Will I like St. Mary’s College of Maryland?
A: We think so! St. Mary’s College offers a personal academic experience similar to that of an elite, private college with a 10:1 student faculty ratio, nearly 100 clubs and student organizations, and Division III athletics on a stunning waterfront campus–all at the price of a public institution.
Q. I heard that there is a special agreement between the College of Southern Maryland and St. Mary’s called the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Transfer Edge Program (STEP), where can I find more information?
A. The STEP program was officially launched in November 2020. You can find out more information about it here.
We also have Articulation Agreements with most Maryland community colleges, making the path from those colleges into St. Mary’s practically seamless.

- You may use the Common Application or the St. Mary’s Application: Both applications are user friendly and there is no preference.

- Your personal statement (essay telling us about you) may be submitted with either application.

- Letter of Recommendation: Submitted by a college professor by mail or email.

- Official College Transcripts: Sent directly to the Office of Admission by mail or electronically from all institutions attended (whether or not you earned credit)

- If you have earned fewer than 24 college-level credits, your final high school transcript is required.

- SMCM is test-optional so you may choose whether to submit your standardized testing if you have less than 24 college-level credits.

The College Registrar Report should be downloaded and completed by your college/university registrar or appropriate college official who can verify your enrollment and academic standing.

- $50 Application Fee: Note-Fee can be waived for all first generation applicants and for students with a fee waiver approval.

- We recognize achievement in the arts, and we encourage you to submit samples of your work for review by our faculty.
