We trace our roots…
…to when a doctor, a lawyer, and a planter proposed a public, non-denominational boarding school for girls as a “living monument” to the original Maryland colony at St. Mary’s City. From its founding in 1840, the school evolved to a junior college then to the four-year coeducational institution it is today. Fast forward to 1992; this is the year that St. Mary’s College of Maryland became the public honors college of the state, committed to the traditions of the liberal arts.
Over the years, St. Mary’s College has cultivated a community of outstanding scholarship steeped in the ideals of diversity, environmental stewardship, creative and intellectual exploration, civic-mindedness, and global engagement.
This year, 2015, we’re proud to mark our dodransbicentennial (175th anniversary). To honor this milestone, we’re celebrating with a yearlong series of programs and activities that tie into the college’s rich history and long-standing ideals. We invite you to visit this website often for news, special events and other information related to this yearlong celebration.
